Introduction
In a world where social media often glamorizes the life of a software developer, presenting it as a leisurely career with minimal effort and maximum rewards, the reality can be quite different. Many viral videos suggest that developers spend a couple of hours coding and then enjoy the rest of their day off. However, as someone deeply embedded in the tech industry, I can assure you that the truth is far more demanding and rewarding.
I work at a mid-sized non-tech company in a tech role. I highly encourage everyone who is looking to break into tech to look into smaller non-tech companies for a first role.
In my latest YouTube video, I take you through a realistic day in the life of a software developer. This is not one of those superficial glimpses into the life of a tech professional but a genuine portrayal of the dedication and hard work that goes into this career. Watch the full video here.
Early Start: The 5 AM Routine
The day starts early—at 5 AM. This might sound daunting, but it's a necessary part of balancing personal growth and professional commitments. Waking up early allows me to have some quiet time to plan my day, engage in personal development activities like reading or exercising (I usually ride my horse), and prepare for the work ahead.
Morning Hustle: Pre-Work Prep
From 5 AM to 8 AM, I focus on activities that set a positive tone for the day. This includes a meditation session, breakfast, and reviewing my task list. It's essential to have a structured start to ensure that the rest of the day flows smoothly. I use monday.com both personally and professionally to organize my day. It’s part of my routine to do a codewars or leetcode challenge just to keep me sharp and I usually learn something new or try to work on a weak area.
The 8-Hour Shift
Contrary to popular belief, being a software developer involves much more than just coding for a few hours. My workday spans a full 8 hours, during which I tackle a variety of tasks:
Morning Stand-Up Meetings: These are crucial for aligning with the team, discussing progress, and planning the day's tasks.
Coding Sessions: The core part of my job, where I work on new features, fix bugs, and improve existing codebases.
Collaborative Work: Whether it's pair programming or brainstorming sessions, collaboration is key to success in software development. Working with people outside of my “IT Team”.
Code Reviews: Ensuring that all code adheres to quality standards and best practices is a significant part of the day.
Learning and Development: The tech industry evolves rapidly, so continuous learning is a must.
Balancing Personal and Professional Life
After clocking out, the work doesn't necessarily end. I often spend evenings learning new technologies, working on personal projects, or contributing to open-source communities. Balancing professional responsibilities with personal development is crucial for long-term success in this field.
Conclusion
The life of a software developer is challenging but incredibly rewarding. It demands dedication, continuous learning, and the ability to adapt to ever-changing technologies. If you're considering a career in software development, be prepared for the hard work and long hours. However, know that the effort you put in will be worth it.
